Realm of Chaos

Prior to the creation of Sarlona, only the Realm of Chaos existed. The Realm is often described an endless expanse of Tides flowing forward, back, even up and down. One could not journey a up, down, north, south, east or west without a new storm arising, swelling over your head. Some creatures in the Realm of Chaos might be nearly eternal, others live for only seconds.

Great beings known as the Masters of Chaos would travel through the tides of the world creating the ripples others would feel. The Masters of Chaos – or the Makers of Illusions, or the Shifters of Reality – were abhorrent beasts, with spikes for heads and long, grotesque tentacles for a body. Under their reign, there was no thing as certainty, and every creature lived in fear of suddenly shifting to a new tide of existence, being caught between two, or just ceasing to exist altogether.

Between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago, depending on the myth, the gods pushed back the Realm of Chaos, creating the Material Land and the other tides (planes) that we D&Ders know and love.  Though the Realm of Chaos is mostly contained, it is always attempting to regain control of the Material Land and other tides, and often times Tides of Chaos break out of the Realm of Chaos and reach the Material Land.
